On Thursday, March 28, I will be named Toronto’s Sixth Poet Laureate at Toronto’s City hall. I will be officially recognized at Toronto’s City Council at 9:30 am sharp. The introduction will include remarks by Mayor John Tory. Then, I’ll briefly address Council and read one poem. This will also mark the launch of the city’s celebration of National Poetry Month.
UPDATE: I’ve posted video of today’s event on my Audio/Video page.
UPDATE: I now have an additional twitter handle: @ToPoetLaureate
I follow poets Dennis Lee, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, Dionne Brand, George Elliot Clarke, and Anne Michaels in receiving the honour. During my three-year appointment, I’m looking forward to championing a multi-lingual city poetry project.
For more information about my new role, please see the city’s website: toronto.ca/poetlaureate.
And, stay apprised of my offical duties by visiting my Events Calendar.
