Celebration of Life of Pier Giorgio Di Cicco
February 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Please join me on Tuesday, February 4th 2020 to celebrate the life and work of Toronto’s late Poet Laureate, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco.
Father Pier Giorgio Di Cicco was the city’s second Poet Laureate from 2004 to 2009. Di Cicco extended the role of Poet Laureate beyond the area of arts advocacy and into the realm of “civic aesthetic”, a term coined to define the building of a city by citizenship, civic ethic and urban psychology. He died on December 22, 2019.
The celebration will be held February 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Members’ Lounge of Toronto City Hall’s Council Chambers, 100 Queen St. W. and is wholly open to the public. I will be the host. And the event will include readings and remarks by former Poet Laureates Anne Michaels and Dennis Lee along with music by David Sereda and remembrances from other poets and associates.
An advocate for poetry, language and the arts, Toronto’s Poet Laureate attends events across the city to promote and attract people to literature, and the spoken and written word. The position honours a Toronto poet whose work displays excellence and who has written on themes relevant to Torontonians. The Poet Laureate’s mandate also includes the creation of a legacy project that will be unique to the individual. One of Di Cicco’s legacies was his book, Municipal Mind: Manifestos for a Creative City, which was published in 2007 while he was Poet Laureate.
