from Signs and Certainties

Yet I have seen the farmer’s pods
though bred long and with great care,
still fall and rot on the ground
unless year after year the man
picks off the largest. So everything
falls backward, runs from much to less,
as a rower in a strong river,
if he relaxes for a moment,
is swept down toward the sea.

While this individual title is out of print, the poetry is reprinted in Early Poems
